Nhiều lúc người Việt mình dich tiếng anh theo kiểu word by word :) mình cũng hay thế nên nhiều lúc dịch ko sát nghĩa.

Mình muốn cải thiện trình độ tiếng anh eo hẹp của mình, mọi người có muốn cùng học ko?

Mình sẽ post một đoạn hội thoại hàng ngày của người anh và chúng ta cùng dịch nhé. Chỗ nào là thành ngữ(Idiom) mình sẽ ctrl_B để mọi người nhìn rõ :D. Chúng ta cùng thử nha.

Sau khi mọi người dịch rồi mình sẽ đưa nghĩa của các thành ngữ để xem chúng ta dịch có chuẩn ko nhé.

Bài đầu sẽ để 3 ngày để mọi người làm bài rồi chúng ta cùng xem ý nghĩa của các thành ngữ. Còn từ bài thứ 2 sẽ là 2 ngày để làm bài.

Yêu cầu mọi người chỉ post bài làm ko spam ở đây, bài spam sẽ bị xoá.

Bob works as a manager in a furniture store. Peter, his boss, is not happy about sales. Bob's new advertising campaign hasn't helped. Peter decides to fire him.

Peter: Bob, I hate to break the news, but our sales were down again last month.

Bob: Down again, Peter?

Peter: Yeah. These days, everybody's shopping at our compe¬
tition, Honest Abe's Furniture Store.

Bob: But everything in there costs an arm and a leg!

Peter: That's true. They do charge top dollar.

Bob: And their salespeople are very strange. They really give
me the creeps!

Peter: Well, they must be doing something right over there.
Meanwhile, we're about to go belly-up.

Bob: I'm sorry to hear that. I thought my new advertising
campaign would save the day.

Peter: Let's face it: your advertising campaign was a real flop.

Bob: Well then I'll go back to the drawing board.

Peter: It's too late for that. You're fired!

Bob: What? You're giving me the ax?

Peter: Yes. I've already found a new manager. She's as sharp as a tack.

Bob: Can't we even talk this over? After all, I've been working here for 10 years!

Peter: There's no point in arguing, Bob. I've already made up my mind.

Bob: Oh well, at least I won't have to put up with your non¬sense anymore! Good-bye to you and good-bye to this dead-end job.

Peter: Please leave before I lose my temper!

Bob làm quản lí trong một cửa hàng nội thất.Sếp của Bob không hài lòng về doanh thu của cửa hàng.Mặc dù Bob đã đưa ra chiến lược kinh doanh nhưng không hiệu quả.Peter quyết định xa thải Bob.

Peter: Bob,tôi rất tiếc phải thông báo tin này ,nhưng doanh thu của chúng ta tháng trước lại giảm.:(

Bob : giảm ư, Peter?:angry

Peter: Yeah.Những ngày này,mọi người mọi người mua đều mua hàng ở của hàng Honest Abe's Furniture đối thủ cạnh tranh với chúng ta.~x(

Bob:Nhưng mọi thứ ở đó rất đắt đỏ

Peter : Đúng vậy. giá của họ cao ngất trời

Bob: Và người bán hàng của họ rất kỳ lạ.Họ làm tôi không thể ưa nổi

Peter: Uh,tôi nghĩ họ phải làm 1 cái j đó.Chúng ta phải đi tìm hiểu sự việc thôi

Bob: Tôi rất tiếc.Tôi nghĩ chiến dịch quảng cáo mới của tôi sẽ cứu vãn được tình thế

Peter: Hãy đối diện với sự thật đi Bob: Chiến dịch quảng cáo của anh thật sự không ổn

Peter: Đã quá trễ rồi.Anh đã bị sa thải

Bob: Cái gì? ông muốn sa thải tôi?

Peter: Đúng,tôi đã tìm được người quản lí mới. Cô ấy rất nhạy bén

Bob: Chúng ta có thể thương lượng lại được ko?Xét cho cùng tôi cũng đã làm việc ở đây 10 năm rồi.

Peter: Chúng ta không tranh cãi ở đây Bob ạ.Tôi đã suy nghĩ rất kĩ.

Bob: Tốt thôi,ít nhất tôi cũng không phải chịu đựng những lời vô nghĩa của ông nữa.Chào ông và chào cả cái công việc làm đến chết này:angry
Peter: Biến ngay trước khi tao nổi điên( :haha: e nghĩ Peter sẽ ko còn bình tĩnh để nói là :hãy rời khỏi đây trước khi tôi nổi cáu.Dịch vậy cho nó sinh động:D )

Lesson 1: Một ngày của Bob ở nơi làm việc.

Bob là một quản lý ở cửa hàng đồ nội thất. Peter ông chủ của Bob đang ko may mắn trong kinh doanh. Chiến dịch quảng cáo mới của Bob cũng ko giúp được gì. Peter quyết định sa thải anh ấy.

Peter: Bob, tôi ghét phải nói điều này nhưng doanh thu của chúng ta lại giảm

Bob: Lại giảm thưa ông?

Peter: Đúng thế. Gần đây mọi người đi mua hàng ở công ty cạnh tranh của chúng ta công y Honest Abe

Bob: Nhưng mọi thứ ở đó đều quá đắt.

Peter: Đúng thế. Họ đã bán với giá cao nhất.

Bob: Và những người bán hàng của họ rất lạ. Họ thật sự làm tôi sợ

Peter: Vậy họ đã làm được một cái gì đó trong khi chúng ta đang sẵn sàng vỡ nợ.

Bob: Tôi xin lỗi vì điều đó. Tôi nghĩ chiến lược quảng cáo của tôi sẽ ngăn chặn được thảm hoạ này

Peter: Chấp nhận thực tế đi: chiến lược quảng cáo của cậu đã hỏng rồi.

Bob: Chúng ta ko thể thảo luận lại được sao? Dù sao, tôi đã làm việc ở đây được 10 năm rồi !

Peter: Ko có lý do gì để tranh cãi nữa Bob. Tôi đã quyết định.

Bob: Ồ được thôi, ít nhất tôi sẽ ko phải chịu đựng mà ko dám than phiền về tính khô khan của ông nữa ! Tạm biệt ông và tạm biệt cái công việc ko đi đến đâu này.

Peter: Đi ngay trước khi tôi nổi điên lên. :D

about to - ready to

Vì chị là người post bài nên dù sao cũng biết trước nghĩa của nó rùi nên sau khi post nghĩa của các thành ngữ chị sẽ làm bài.

Hic mà biết rồi dịch vẫn thấy khó :) thử xem nhé, chút nữa chị post đang bận chút.

2 bạn trên dịch rất tốt, đặc biệt là bạn thứ 2. nhưng vẫn còn có một số lổi do nghiă của idiom rất khó. Such as:
go back to the drawing board: làm lại từ đầu
go belly-up: tiến tới phá sản.
Ý kiến của Thủy rất hay và có ich, anh sẽ cố gắng theo học lớp này đến cùng. Let try outbest!

Hjc hjc...lâu hok đông đén TA...đọc méo cả mồm mà hok bít phát âm có chuẩn hok nữa......hoa lun cả mắt rùi.....chắc hè này theo học lớp TA nào đó thui....sắp ra trường roài..có thêm cái bằng NN nữa thì tốt bít mấy...nhưng mà lười wa'

Mình có ý kiến thế này để tránh việc chúng ta lướt qua các thành ngữ quá nhanh mà ko đọng lại gì, yêu cầu mọi người viết 2 câu cho mỗi thành ngữ để kiểm tra xem chúng ta hiểu nghĩa của thành ngữ đến đâu OK.

Nếu mọi người đồng ý thì ngày hôm nay sẽ dành cho việc viết 2 câu cho mỗi thành ngữ. Ngày mai chúng ta sẽ tiếp tục học bài thứ 2.

Có thể có một số idiom mà nghĩa của nó còn chưa rõ ràng, huặc dùng chưa đúng trường hợp, hoàn cảnh. Sau đây là 1 số ý kiến cá nhân của mình về 1 số lỗi sau khi đọc bài 1 số bạn. Mình mạnh dạn nêu ra hy vọng mọi người cùng suy ngẫm, đánh giá và cho ý kiến.
- about to: tobe about to do st
+ I’m about to review this lesson. 
+ Hi, you come soon 15’ but I’m about to go with you.

# about to: Suýt, sắp sửa (định làm nhưng sau đó ko làm). cho nên nó diễn tả 1 hành động khác với dự định.

+ I’m about to review this lesson (sẽ có nghĩa là: tôi định ôn lại bài này, nhưng cuối cùng tôi ko ôn)
+ you come soon 15’ but I’m about to go with you: không hợp lý và khó hiểu.

+ Go back to the drawing board. thường có nghĩa là: 1 kế hoạch, nhiệm vụ hay 1 công việc gì (đã dành thời gian cho nó) đã bị hỏng cho nên làm lại từ đầu.

+ Chú ý thì, ngữ pháp, cách dùng để làm rõ nghĩa hơn trong các câu dịch:
go belly-up
+ He is very sad because his company go belly-up.
+ I hate him. I wish his company go belly-up
....và nhiều câu khác nưă..
# Rất nhiều lỗi với thêm (S):cost an arm and a leg

Lose one's temper: mất bình tĩnh, nổi nóng (nói về bản thân huặc người đang đề cập)

Ngoài ra còn nhiều lỗi nữa mà rất dễ gặp phải, vì hạn hẹp ngôn từ nên mình khó nêu hết ở đây được.

định làm gì ngay tức khắp, sắp làm gì

khi tôi định nói thì anh lại ngắt lời tôi

Em trích từ từ điển lạc việt, theo như ở đây thì about to là sẵn sàng làm gì đó mà.

Còn các câu khác em sẽ xem lại và sửa. Hic khó quá :D

Anh chưa kiểm tra từ điển, nhưng theo ý nghía trong bài thì nó co nghía la suýt làm, sắp làm, nhưng sau đó thay đổi chủ ý. Trong phần giải thích nghĩa mà em post lên cũng có nghĩa giống như em nói nhưng nó không tâp trung vào nghĩa đó mà tập trung vào nghĩa giống như anh.

Bob tells his wife Susan that he lost his job. Susan suggests that he start his own business.

Way to go!(you did very well). However, To be closer to daily conversation in VN, you can use some similar vietnamese idioms for translation, such as:
+ Peter's right-hand man: cánh tay phải của Peter
+ Thank goodness: cảm ơn trời đất, tạ ơn chúa...
+ he stabbed me in the back: hắn chơi anh 1 cú đau quá~x( :D
+ Easier said than done: nói thì dễ nhưng làm thì khó
+ you won't have to set eyes on Peter ever again: anh yêu (hihihi, ngọt quá) sẻ không phải nhìn cái bản mặt đáng ghét của hắn lần nào nữa.

This topic is very interesting. My only comment is that, in my own point of view, you do not understand very well the idiom "to live from hand to mouth". This idiom is used when somebody is forced to do so not intentionally (to save money for other purposes) like the way you used it in your examples.
When I read your sentences, I remember the humorous story I was told in my childhood. The story was about beggars from some area of Thanh Hoa Province. When asked what made them become beggars, they answered that they wanted to complete their storey buildings.

I agree with you that we should translate coherently, but we are studding Idioms so the inherent meaning and the using circumstance of idioms are crucial important. If anyone goes far from these, it will not be make sense to someone who wants to learn those words. I don’t agree about your translation of the last two sentences too. Wrong grammar, I do not really understand what you mean. Maybe you mean *I knew that I was on thin ice buying at that shop*?. I am not familiar with this idiom so much, but I think this idiom can’t be used in this case.

I don't understand an idiom: Don't take this the wrong way :-?

Tớ tra từ điển E-E thấy thế này:
Take sth the wrong way: to be offended (khó chịu, bực mình) by a remark (lời bình luận, đàm tiếu) because you have understood it differently than someone meant it.

Thế nên trong ngữ cảnh của bài, tớ thấy là: cô gái trong bài có hình thức có vẻ hơi ko vừa mắt (xỏ mũi, tóc đỏ tía) ~x(

Nên bà mẹ có ý nói là: "dù hình thức như thế, nhưng con đừng để ý và khó chịu với những lời bình luận về vẻ bên ngoài của cô gái đó", vì bà biết có thể cô ko giống như vẻ bề ngoài đó.

Hơn nữa:
"Don't take this the wrong way, but she's not exactly my cup of tea"
Câu có 2 vế nối với nhau = "but" nên chắc chắn nghĩa phải trái với nhau. Vế sau bà có ý ko thích cô gái đó, nên vế trước sẽ hàm ý động viên.

hehe, ko biết tớ có hiểu sai ko? anh NTNU và mọi người thử xem giúp tụi em nhé!

Tớ thấy có vẻ hợp lý nhưng Ted ko hề nói gì là ko thích cô ấy mà chính bà mẹ mới nói có hàm ý ko thích :)
Susan: Có phải Amber là cô gái có cái mũi xỏ vòng và mái tóc đỏ tía không?

Sau đó bà lại nói là Don't take this the wrong way (Đừng khó chịu với điều đó) hình như bà đang tự nói với chính mình :D

Thật là khó khi hiểu các một cách đầy đủ nghĩa của idiom. Đọc bài 5, mình chưa thấy bạn nào hiểu đúng hoàn toàn thành ngữ "take something the wrong way". Cách hiểu của mình dài hơn các bạn một chút như thế này, thành ngữ trên có nghĩa là: nhận định sai, hiểu sai, nghĩ sai về cái gì đó nên dẫn tới quyết định sai, có quan điểm sai. Trong bài hội thoại này thì thành ngữ "take this the wrong way" phải được hiểu là bà mẹ muốn nhắc nhở cậu con trai đừng thấy cô bạn gái dùng khuyên mũi, tóc nhuộm xanh đỏ tím vàng (trông có vẻ sành điệu) mà thích.

-> Em vẫn muốn tranh luận một chút. Em nghĩ nếu hiểu theo ý anh thì em ko biết giải thích như thế nào với từ "but":

"Don't take this the wrong way, but she's not exactly my cup of tea".

Em vẫn nghĩ cách hiểu như anh NTNU là đúng, như thế, em có thể dịch cả câu này là:
"Con đừng hiểu sai ý mẹ, nhưng mẹ không thực sự thích cô gái đó".

Nicole discusses her plans to run for student body president. Nicole wants Ted to ask his friends to vote for her. Ted agrees, in exchange for Nicole's help with his homework.

Nicole: I've decided to run for student body president! If I'm going to become a senator one day, I should get some experience under my belt now.

Ted: Andrea Jenkins is also running. She'll give you a run for your money!

Nicole: Andrea Jenkins is an idiot. I'm by far the better candidate.

Ted: Don't be so full of yourself! I might vote for Andrea.

Nicole: Stop kidding around. Let's get down to business. I need your help.

Ted: You want me to help you!

Nicole: Yes. I need you to talk your friends into voting for me.

Ted: But you never give my friends the time of day. All you give them is the cold shoulder.

Nicole: That's because they've got blue hair and nose rings!

Ted: They're better than your friends — a bunch of goody¬goodies and brown-nosers!

Nicole: That's beside the point. Let's talk about your friends and their votes.

Ted: Okay. You scratch my back and I'll scratch yours. If you do my chemistry homework, I'll help you get the votes.

Nicole: I'm not crazy about that idea. But, okay, it's a deal. I hope I can count on you.

LESSON 10 : BOB VISITS THE VILLAGE MARKET

Bob goes to the Village Market, a supermarket in town. He asks Carol, the owner of the store, if she would like to sell Susan's Scrumptious Cookies. Carol agrees, but isn't able to tell Bob how much she'll pay him.

Bob: Thank you for making time for me today, Carol.

Carol: Don't mention it, Bob. What's up?

Bob: My wife baked these cookies from scratch. Please take one.

Carol: Mmmm, chewy. These are out of this world!

Bob: My wife's a great cook.

Carol: You can say that again. I don't want to make a pig of myself, but let me take a few more.

Bob: Oink oink! Just kidding!

Carol: I'd like to sell these at the Village Market. My cus¬tomers will go nuts over these!

Bob: How much would you pay us for each cookie?

Carol: I'm not sure. I need to roll up my sleeves and figure out the finances.

Bob: Can you give me a ballpark figure now?

Carol: I don't want to jump the gun. Sit tight for now, and we'll talk things over this evening.
